Sulfopropylated chain-extenders for aqueous PU dispersions – EPS, the innovative solution
Aqueous PU dispersions are gaining in importance, for example in the fabric and leather coating industry, and also in the adhesives sector, especially shoe manufacturing. The stability of such dispersions is the crucial factor. To guarantee stability, it is necessary to use the appropriate PU monomer components with hydrophilic properties for this synthesis. Previously, manufacturers were offered carboxylate compounds which were inserted into the polymer either via prepolymer synthesis or through chain-extending. The properties obtained, however, could not meet the constantly changing demands. Significantly, it is possible to achieve PU dispersions with better hydrophilic properties using a sulphonate base. These, however, are available only as ready-to-use formulations which may not be altered for customer-specific applications.
RASCHIG's newly developed PU monomer EPS enables significant improvement for hydrophilic aqueous PU dispersions. EPS, is unique in the market, and is a sulfopropylated diamine which is optimal for use in aqueous PU dispersions. With its outstanding chain-extender properties it enables PU manufacturers to achieve an individual and specific level of stability, as well as the required hydrophilicity of their PU dispersions.
EPS is available as an aqueous solution and may be used in both the prepolymer process and the acetone process. Product licensing in Europe is expected by the end of 2008.
